Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that adversely affects the brain’s ability to initiate and control muscle movement.  Patients gradually lose the ability to move their limbs, speak, swallow and in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.  The cruel reality is that a patient’s mind and mental faculties are not affected so they remain keenly aware of what is happening throughout the progression of the disease. Most individuals die within 2 to 5 years from diagnosis and there is currently no known cure.   You can help us make a difference.

In addition to helping fund research for a cure, your generous donations give the South Carolina Chapter of the ALS Association the ability to provide care and support to local ALS patients and families who battle the disease every day. Every year the support and funding for ALS continues to grow right along with the hopes and prayers of the families and patients who believe we can one day find a cure.
